This is an illustration of learning. It’s a pragmatic sketch, illustrating our own certainty over time, and the ways in which learning may involve disturbance, ambiguity, and a series of connections and failures, each of which carries us one step further.
This is not a ‘roadway’ – there is no certainty that in any particular specific context we will make it to the end.
It’s a pragmatic tool to use as a mirror for any learning programme: if we do not find disturbance, we remain in our legacy of certainty. If we cannot tolerate ambiguity, or if we persecute it, we simply rationalise the learning against what we already know to be true. If we find insight, but fail to reconnect into action, application, then we are interested but ineffective. And if we hold failure at the local level, we get trapped by tribal folklore that strangles change.
Of course this sketch is imperfect and inaccurate in many ways, but the thing about a mirror is that it does not make you beautiful. It shows you how you are.
Often learning programmes get stuck before disturbance, get lost in ambiguity, or give insight, but not application (as well as a hundred other ways to be ineffective – i’ve done them all!).
