Feel the fear and do it anyway: writing bad stories to learn

BooksWe used stories today to write good and then bad examples of community management. Funnily enough, the bad stories were easier to write. I wished i’d used the decibel meter on the iPhone as we were writing, because there was more laughter and hubbub as we wrote the bad ones and i think i could have quantified it!

I wonder why?

I think it’s because you can’t go wrong writing a bad story, so you feel uninhibited in a group, but you can write an unintentionally bad ‘good’ story, so feel a fear of failure or of being judged.

Normally i try to avoid creating bad examples in workshops, because they are often more memorable than the good ones, but this has made me rethink.

Stories are so powerful, helping us establish commonality and share ideas. It’s been a really good day.

    I agree wholeheartedly with your two contradictory statements! I am always reluctant to use the poor or ‘bad’ example because it may be the stickiest thing around. Conversely that sense of permission or freedom that comes with writing without concern for the final product can often lead to a greater sense of voice and to some wonderful discoveries.

    My question for you is, were you really trying to write poorly or had you simply agreed that the quality of the outcome was not particularly important and you were free to experiment, and try out anything you wanted because you were not putting much stock in the finished product. Was your goal process rather than product or was it very product oriented in that you were being very intentional about actually producing ‘bad’ writing?
