One Hundred, not out. Reflections on the Learning Blog.

Today, it’s a reflective post, because this is number 100. Since i started the blog on the 1st January, 2011, i’ve managed to achieve what i set out to do and have written every weekday, with the exception of UK Bank Holidays, which i gave myself off!

The majority of posts have been written in Starbucks in Westbourne (on the South Coast, by the sea, for overseas readers), with the next most constructive place being on the train, usually to London, but also to Bath, Bristol, Southampton, Weymouth, Reading and Birmingham. I’ve written posts at Heathrow airport, Gatwick, Amsterdam, Geneva, Toronto, Southampton and Bournemouth, as well as several at circa 30,000 feet, including one over, and about, Greenland.

In most cases, i’ve written on the day i posted, usually first thing. This was a key part of my time management strategy, to prioritise this above everything else. On three occasions, i’ve not been able to find time till the afternoon, which actually felt pretty stressful. On one occasion, i met someone for a meeting and had to ask them to let me write for 20 minutes before we started (thanks Liz), as i was too distracted until i’d done it. I don’t have a big bank of ready prepared articles, but i do have around 20 ‘thoughts’, most of which are just titles and a line or two.

I’m currently working with five separate people on jointly written posts, although so far, i’ve only published one (thanks Liz, again).

My aims with the blog were simple:
To write original content around all aspects of learning.
To learn something new myself.
To be positive and constructive, never critical.
To collaborate and write with other people.

I didn’t want to just repost or comment on other people’s writing, and i certainly didn’t want to just write negatively about other peoples thoughts or experiences. I wanted to learn a ‘voice’ for blogging, and to be unafraid to be reflective and introspective, as well as curious and keen to explore new areas.

There are around forty regular readers, with many other people dropping by. In the first ten weeks, i had two hits from search engines. In the last month, that’s shot up to around ten a day. I’ve not dedicated as much time as i’d like to collaborative writing, but people certainly seem keen to engage, so that will be a focus for the coming months. I’ve certainly learnt a lot, about the subject, about myself, about others, but particularly about how i spend my time, and how i manage it. I never thought i’d practically manage to clear out an hour a day from my diary, but i have, and i do, and it’s probably the thing that people ask me about most. Certainly in professional relationships, it’s the thing people are most curious about; how i find the time.

My first target was to get to 20 posts, the second target is here, to reach 100. My final target is 200 posts in the first year, then i’ll decide where i want to take it. All thoughts and reflections would be welcome. I believe that we can learn more and be more successful in collaboration. Thanks for reading!
